1940's French Work Chambary Dress
French work dress

Chambray, also known as chambray or young cloth, is widely known for its origins in the Cambrai region of France. Originally woven from a blend of linen and silk, it was later made with cotton yarn as cotton became more common. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used for various work shirts, until the US Navy officially mandated that all work shirts for shipboard personnel be made of chambray in 1901. After World War II, chambray spread to the civilian population, and the durable, breathable chambray became a hallmark of blue-collar workwear. It was found not only in military uniforms, but also among farmers, workers, and even sailors, and is now a staple of many fashion brands.

Using the same yarn-dyed weaving method, at first glance, the mottled appearance of chambray is somewhat similar to the texture of denim, but a closer look reveals the difference in the fabric texture. The former is a plain weave and the latter is a twill weave. Unlike the rough feel of the denim twill weave, the plain weave Chambray is lighter and more comfortable to the touch, and has its unique delicacy and charm.
